What is the goal of habilitation?

Rehabilitation
Habilitation

Habilitation is the next step after treatment and physical/mental rehabilitation. The main task is to help people adapt to life in new conditions after amputations and complex injuries, with disabilities and in wheelchairs, to acquire and practice self-reliance skills.

Here, residents learn autonomy, how to live in an inclusive space and beyond its boundaries. They develop all the necessary abilities for a successful reintegration into society after an injury.

The habilitation process is based on the principles of the «Therapeutic Community» methodology.

Living with family

Become a resident

In the center, residents can live with family members who also participate in all activities. This way, the results of the habilitation course are enhanced.

Recovery in the company of loved ones happens much faster, which is why the atmosphere at HAB is truly familial, without exaggeration.

What the Residents Say

Sashko

About his stay at HAB: I really liked the atmosphere, the very warm attitude, and the friendly, great team. I made new friends. I really enjoyed the hippotherapy, the mountains, art therapy, and yoga. Everything was just wonderful. Life after habilitation is very sad, joyless, and has lost all meaning. That’s why I really want to come back soon because I miss you all very much.

Ihor

Every day we have sessions, including psychological support and art therapy. Different people and volunteers come to help, offering support for our minds and giving us the chance to try something new. For veterans who are often in treatment and may struggle to find themselves, there is always someone to talk to here. People just like you, each with their own injury—some missing an eye, some after an amputation, others in a wheelchair. We understand each other. The rooms are adapted for people with physical needs like ours.

Since I have gone through the path of treatment, rehabilitation, and adaptation myself, I realized that after eleven years of war, we still do not have a clear route for veterans to reintegrate into society. This was truly a void, as you were discharged from the hospital into nothing: in our country, there is practically nothing set up for mobility in a wheelchair, and you have not been trained or tried to do anything independently in this new state. That’s why we created HAB.

Philosophy of HAB

The habilitation process at HAB is based on the concept of kintsugi — finding strength in the places of fracture. This traditional Japanese method of mending broken ceramics with gold and platinum is something our residents partly learn as part of art therapy.

The golden lines symbolize unity, strength, and resilience. Each person creates a unique plate and, in doing so, tells their story — a story of transition from military to civilian life. The world breaks everyone, and many become even stronger at their fractures.
